Did you know one in
six American women will become a victim of rape or attempted rape?
-National Institute of Justice Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention
Tragically, many of these crimes go unpunished.
There are literally hundreds of thousands of unprocessed
DNA evidence packages, or "Rape Kits" sitting on shelves
in police stations all across our Nation. Each one of these kits
represents a violent offender that may be roaming free on our streets
today, many of which are repeat offenders. With a cost of more than
$500 to test one kit, a lack of funding is the primary reason for
the backlog. The objective of this Web site is to raise awareness
about the need to test rape evidence kits as quickly as possible
and bring serial rapists to justice.
There is hope
The National Rape Evidence Project (NREP) is
a national campaign seeking to support expedited DNA testing for
as many of the rape evidence collection kits currently stored in
police departments across the US as possible as well as increase
public awareness of the number of backlogged kits and the need for
systematic change in order to prevent the backlog from recurring.
This Web site is a place where survivors and supporters
can obtain information on what to do if you or someone you know
becomes a victim of rape, look under the Survivor
Support link for more information.
